FAQs About Gaiwans

1
What material should I choose for a gaiwan?

Porcelain is the most versatile choice and works well with almost any tea. It doesn’t absorb flavors or aromas.
Glass is especially good for lighter teas, such as green tea, floral teas, lightly oxidized teas, and younger white teas.
Clay gaiwans are better suited to richer, more aged teas. Unlike porcelain and glass, clay may gradually absorb some of the tea’s aroma and flavor.

2
What size gaiwan should I choose?
  • 80–100 ml: Best for one person
  • 100–130 ml: Good for 1–3 people
  • 130 ml+: Better for larger groups

For most Gongfu tea sessions, around 100–130 ml is a versatile everyday size.

3
What’s the difference between a two-piece and three-piece gaiwan?

A two-piece gaiwan includes the bowl and lid, while a three-piece gaiwan also comes with a saucer. The saucer mainly affects presentation and handling—it doesn’t make a significant difference to the actual brewing experience.
